Membership Skills Building and Training Conference Call
Thursday February 21, 2008
2:00 PM EST.
(This call is being held an hour earlier than the usual call time due to the international time difference)
Participants from the US Human Rights Network Delegation report back from Geneva as the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) committee reviews the United States
The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, also known as ICERD, or more commonly, CERD, is an international treaty designed to protect individuals from discrimination based on race, whether that discrimination is intentional, or is the result of seemingly neutral policies.
The US Human Rights Network (USHRN) has been working for the past year with member organizations and with domestic NGO and grassroots organizations in the shadow reporting process of CERD. The US Human Rights Network has organized a delegation that will go to Geneva, Switzerland to observe, and exchange experiences with other NGO’s during the review process. Members of the USHRN delegation will also be given the opportunity to speak during the review session, sharing their experiences with racial discrimination and violations the CERD treaty; to which the US is a signatory.
On Thursday, February 21st, members of the USHRN delegation, which include grassroots organizers, youth, housing rights, stop school to prison pipeline advocates, LGBT organizers and others, will provide participant report backs on the review process that is taking place at the United Nations in regards to the CERD review process.
This will be a historic opportunity that will allow conference call participants to get a timely update on what is taking place in regards to “Holding the US Accountable!”
