Dear Friend of Children’s Rights,
Earlier this week, the independent monitor tracking the child welfare reforms mandated by the settlement of our landmark class action in New Jersey issued a very encouraging report on improvements the state has made. Yesterday, the judge in the case commended the state for making “tremendous progress.”
On balance, it has been a good week for Children’s Rights. As you will see in the New York Times story and other press accounts linked below, we have begun to turn around a child welfare system that had been grossly neglected for more than a decade.
And the changes taking place there are having a real effect on the lives of the children in the state’s care. Adoptions have increased. The number of foster families licensed to take in abused and neglected children has tripled since last year. The state is training its caseworkers better, and it has reduced the crippling caseloads that had been preventing workers from investigating claims of abuse, monitoring children in foster care, and responding to their needs.
New Jersey still has a long way to go. In addition to the good news about these improvements, this week also brought troubling news about four children who died in state custody before many of the reforms had been implemented, and there are still many children who have not felt the result of the changes in their day-to-day lives.
That is why the work of Children’s Rights is so important. We must always remain vigilant to hold New Jersey and other states like it accountable, and to ensure that they live up to the promises they have made to do better for the abused and neglected children in their care.
